Intraurethral Catheter In Patients with Acute Urinary Retention due to Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy: Clinical Applicability

Abstract
Insertion of intraurethral catheters (IUSCs) were performed in 12 patients with acute urinary retention due to benign prostatic hyperplasia from March 1990 to August 1991. The inserted IUC was removed from 5 patients within 1 month because of
migration
into the bladder (1), severe dysuria and irritation (2), and obstruction due to blood clot (2) respectively. One additional IUC was removed due to decreasing flow rate 6 weeks after insertion. The 6 of 12 patients (50%) maintained the function
until
after 3 months. The average maximal flow rate of 7 patients was 7.5 ml per second after 1 month and was not changed even after 3 months. Urinary tract infection in 1 patient which occured 6 months after insertion was the only major complication.
We
could not obtain any satisfactory results. Maybe the anatomical configuration of enlarged prostate and the bladder function of each patient would be important factors for the success.
